As the Titanic slowly
sank into the icy lap of
the Atlantic at 2.20 AM
on the fateful night of
April 14 -15, 1912, a
most unusual occurrence
was witnessed on the
scene.
The members of the
ship's orchestra joined
by a few others sang, "
Nearer My God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee"; it was
with this song in their
throats that they went
down to the bottom of
the sea. The sound waves
of this song lingered on
the surface of the water
as the singers
disappeared into the
jaws of Death.
Many ships have sunk in
the oceans and many have
died; but among all
those events this one
stands by itself-the
most touching, the most
written about and the
most remembered. The
main reason for this is
the fact that a few on
board this sinking
vessel were able to
transform that moment of
terror and pain into an
opportunity for showing
the reality of their
strength and faith in
God.
Their words and behavior
proved that they had had
victory over Death
through their Saviour
and Lord Jesus Christ,
the Son of God who
became Man, suffered
death on the cross for
all the sins of mankind,
rose from the grave on
the third day and
ascended to heaven.
The courage and calmness
they displayed in the
face of death tell us
that those who accept
Jesus as their Saviour
and Lord can say
" O, DEATH, WHERE IS
YOUR VICTORY? O, DEATH,
WHERE IS YOUR STING?"
(I Corinthians 15:55 -
BIBLE).
Won't you like to
receive eternal life and
forgiveness of sins
through Jesus Christ and
be transformed into one
who does not have to
fear death? Don't you
like to become as
courageous as those
brave souls on the deck
of the Titanic, who
calmly faced death
singing their song of
victory and committing
their spirits into the
hands of their heavenly
Father?
